Family Medicine Activities

The core of family medicine training is internal medicine. Sometimes known as general, adult medicine, internal medicine involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that, generally, can be treated without surgery. Major areas of internal medicine include cardiology (medicine of the heart and blood vessels), pulmonology (medicine of the respiratory system), endocrinology (medicine of glands, hormones, and metabolism), gastroenterology (medicine of the gastrointestinal tract), and rheumatology (medicine connected with conditions caused by the immune system.

Pediatric Activities

Pediatrics refers to the practice of general medicine in children, adolescents, and teenagers. Depending on the condition, situation, and community, this field of medicine can include the treatment of patients into their 20s and beyond. Much of the activities in the practice of pediatrics centers on routine child examinations and the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infections diseases. However, as in the case of adult internal medicine, pediatrics is divided into subspecialties, such as cardiology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Activities

Obstetrics is the management of the health care of pregnancy. Thus, the activities in obstetrics includes the diagnosis of pregnancy, the monitoring of pregnant mothers and their products of conception - known as embryos from conception to 8 weeks of gestation, and beyond that known as fetuses. Activities also include the diagnosis and treatment of complications of pregnancy, management of delivery, care for the mother subsequent to delivery, and the provision of pregnancy termination. Generally, family practice physicians manage only uncomplicated obstetrical cases, and refer complicated cases to obstetrics/gynecology specialists. Gynecology is the clinical care of the female patient in areas that are specific to females.

Family Practice Activities in General Surgery, Psychiatry, Neurology, and other Specialties

In remote areas, family physicians sometimes perform surgery. Unlike physicians who train purely in internal medicine, family physicians do have some surgical training, although it is limited. Activities in general surgery in which family physicians may become involved include the diagnosis of abdominal pain and the performance of very routine operations, such as appendectomy in geographical areas where surgeons are in short supply. Similarly, family physicians often are needed to diagnose and treat common psychiatric conditions, such as mood disorders (for instance, depression), or anxiety disorders. Conditions that family physicians encounter often that fall within the area of neurology include strokes. Other specialties that family physicians need to learn include orthopedics, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology (medicine of the ears, nose, and throat).
