How to Become a Hospital Radiology Technician

Trying to find a job can be very difficult to do. However, learn the basics of radiology technician training, and the chances of becoming employed are very high.

Learn how to become a hospital radiology technician and you will have a high level of job security. Radiology technician jobs are expected to grow rapidly in the future. It is projected that by 2018 there will be 251,700 jobs in this field. The highest paid technicians made $75,000 in 2008 and the average pay was about $42,710. As a hospital radiology technician, you will be doing X-rays, Cat-Scans, and Magnetic Resonance Imagining (MRI), and mammography procedures. Step 1 Becoming a Radiology Tech

Learn how to become a hospital radiology technician by reading as much information as you can about the topic. Apply for a position as a hospital radiology technician volunteer. Do the volunteer work for at least six months and get to know the technicians in the department. Observe how they perform their duties to help you learn what the profession entails. Read the book "Introduction to Radiologic Technology" by La Verne Tolley Gurley Ph.D and William J. Calloway the 5th ed. Talk to radiology professionals in the field and ask them how they got started as a radiology technician. Prepare a list of at least test ten questions to ask them and take notes and then listen carefully as they speak.

Step 2 Radiology Technician Schools

Locate several radiology technician schools to help you learn how to become a hospital radiology technician. Contact schools admissions officers and ask them for more information about their Radiology programs. Review and compare the programs to find out which program will meet your educational needs and budget. Try to avoid taking out large and expensive student loans to pay for the training. Enroll into a program that you can afford and make sure the program is accredited by your state. Complete the program and prepare to take the certification exam.

Step 3 Passing the ARRT Exam

Pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist exam and you can work as a Radiologic Technologist (RT) in a hospital. Keep in mind that many hospitals are requiring this certification to obtain employment in this position. The test is not easy and 90% of the students pass the test the first time. Thirty-eight states now require employees to be certified to work in this field. The length of the radiology exam is four hours and there are 220 questions on the exam. Make sure you study and read the handbook for the test. You will have three chances to pass the exam within a three year time frame.
